The LIVAC (Linguistic Variations in Chinese Speech Communities) synchronous corpus is based on news media materials sampled and analyzed regularly and synchronously from six Chinese-speaking communities, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai, and Macau.
An annual "New Chinese Buzzword Roster" is also produced on the basis of the bi-weekly records for one year from 2004 onward. The new words appearing in the Pan-Chinese, Beijing, Hong Kong and Taiwan rosters are drawn mostly on the basis of their frequency of occurance in the reports on political, social, and economic events in the different communities during the year. They provide good and useful social and cultural indicators.
The New Chinese Buzz Word Roster is an innovative and experimental attempt. We appreciate comments and suggestions which would improve the Roster and the associated indices.
